Following the dismissal of Georgia men’s basketball coach Tom Crean and the hiring of Mike White, there were questions about whether the Bulldogs lone 2022 signee was sticking with his decision or headed elsewhere. On Saturday, he announced his decision.
Shooting guard JT Elder announced on social media he was decommitting from the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-7 Elder was the only player who signed with Georgia during a period when Crean’s future was very much in question.
“I want to thank Coach Crean and the rest of the staff for giving me the opportunity to play for them at the university of Georgia,” Elder wrote on Instagram. “Due to recent changes within the program, I have decided to reopen my recruitment.”
Dawgs247 reported on March 28 that Elder was likely not going to Georgia after the Bulldogs’ coaching change.
Elder’s path to playing college basketball has had a few bumps along the way.
Elder originally signed with Portland State in November 2020 after averaging 15.4 points and 6.4 rebounds as a junior at Cienega High School in Vail, Arizona. Elder followed with a senior season during which he averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds per game for PHH Prep in Phoenix.
Elder was charged with a DUI shortly after signing, which led to him losing the chance to play for the Vikings.
Elder course-corrected his life after the incident and played a year on the PHH Prep’s postgrad squad. The Tucson native’s efforts caught the eyes of the Georgia coaching staff, leading to his commitment on Oct. 19.
Now, Elder is looking for somewhere else to play.
While it remains to be seen where Elder ends up, he posted a scholarship offer from New Mexico State on Friday night.
With Elder officially no longer an option, the Bulldogs continue to look to reload their roster. Georgia took its first step in that direction Friday, when forming Longwood point guard Justin Hill committed to the Bulldogs.
