Michigan State concluded their 2021-22 season with a Round of 32 exit to the Duke Blue Devils. Now, it is time to turn a new leaf and start getting prepared for the upcoming season and offseason. A huge part of this offseason will be recruiting the 2023 recruiting class. Tom Izzo has already been spotted on the road recruiting several different prospects and is making his presence on the recruiting trail known.
The Spartans already hold a commitment from Jeremy Fears, the No. 26 player in the recruiting class, and they are looking to build off of what the point guard brings them.
Here are five prospects fans should have on their radar as Tom Izzo looks to piece his 2023 recruiting class together:
Braelon Green
Position: Combo-guard
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 175 pounds
Hometown: Southfield, Michigan
High School: Dream City Christian (Glendale, Arizona)
247Sports Composite Ranking: 4-star, No. 42 overall
Analysis: Green is someone who the Spartans feel very confident that they will land in this recruiting class, having gotten out to a huge lead. He is an off-ball wing that will provide ball-handling and shooting. Originally from Michigan, Green has moved around the country playing prep school basketball during his high school time.
Xavier Booker
Position: Center
Height: 6’10”
Weight: 205 pounds
Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana
High School: Cathedral High School (Indianapolis, Indiana)
247Sports Composite Ranking: 4-star, No. 84 overall
Analysis: Booker is arguably the most important recruit in this recruiting class for Tom Izzo and his staff, with a huge need for a modern rim-protecting center. His recruitment is very contested with Michigan, Illinois, Notre Dame and more vying for his services. Be prepared for MSU to go all-in for Booker’s commitment.
curtis williams
Position: Small Forward
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 200 pounds
Hometown: Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
High School: Brother Rice High School
247Sports Composite Rankings: 4-star, No. 40 overall
Analysis: Williams is the number one overall player in the state of Michigan, but does not yet hold an offer from either Michigan State or Michigan. He is a player that fans should monitor because if the coaching staff extends an offer to the Brother Rice product, the recruitment could heat up fast. Right now, Alabama and Maryland are in the mix for Williams.
Cameron Christie
Position: Shooting Guard
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 160 pounds
Hometown: Rolling Meadows, Illinois
High School: Rolling Meadows High School
247Sports Composite Ranking: 3-star, No. 143
Analysis: The brother of current Spartan guard Max Christie, Cameron is on the Michigan State coaching staff’s radar. As of now, there are no plans for Cameron to commit to MSU as there is still a small evaluation process that needs to take place, but if all works out, MSU may have another Christie in the program. Minnesota, Depaul and Iowa are all in contention in this recruitment.
Jalen Hooks
Position: Small Forward
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 180 pounds
Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana
High School: Donda Academy (Simi Valley, California)
247Sports Composite Ranking: 4-star, No. 120
Analysis: Like Williams, Hooks is another wing that doesn’t have an offer from MSU yet. Originally from Indianapolis, now playing in California, Hooks is definitely on the Spartans coach’s radar. With COVID eligibility questions, my assumption is that the MSU coaches do not know if they are going to take 3 or 4 recruits in the 2023 class, but if they do decide they need a 4th member of the class, be on the lookout for them to turn up the pressure on Hooks or Williams at the small forward position. Depaul, Georgia, Illinois, LSU and Pitt are all mixed into Hooks’ recruitment.
